Press releases, 07.12.2020

Ignazio Cassis, head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, has participated in the 37th Francophonie Ministerial Conference, held virtually from Paris on 24–25 November. This annual event brings together the ministers of foreign affairs or ministers for Francophone affairs of the member states and governments of the International Organisation of La Francophonie (IOF). During the conference, the IOF endorsed Switzerland's candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2023–24 term.

2020 marks both the 50th anniversary of La Francophonie as an organisation, founded in Niamey in 1970, and the 20th anniversary of the Bamako Declaration, a normative text on the fundamental values of democracy and the rule of law in French-speaking countries. In his address to IOF members, Mr Cassis highlighted the importance of French, their common language, as a vehicle for upholding shared and universal values for peace, human rights and democracy. He also reaffirmed Switzerland's support for the Secretary-General's reforms to ensure strong and effective multilateralism.
